Why Grassroots Peacebuilding Works by Chris Jameson, 7:30pm
Chris Jameson (pictured below) has worked in radio journalism for 10 years, including with Independent Radio News, Radio Aire, Leeds and BBC Radio 5 Live.

He recently spent 2 years in Japan, during which he designed and coordinated a ‘Virtual High School’ providing interactive mentoring to English language students. He also broadcast a weekly 10 minute diary about life in Japan.

Chris has acted as Chief Producer on a number of Outside Broadcasts, including the US mid-term elections and the Golden Jubilee from Buckingham Palace. He has a degree in Politics from York University.

Chris is currently the Head of Communications at Peace Direct.

"The destiny of human rights is in the hands of all our citizens in all our communities".

Alan Evens will discuss Eleanor Roosevelt's impact on the United Nations and The Struggle For Human Rights.

Alan, a retired lecturer, used to work for the Work Foundation and Highbury College in Portsmouth. He lives in Southsea.

He has been involved with the UN since his days at Queens University, Belfast. He joined the Universities UN Society in 1957 after the Hungarian Rising.

Afghanistan - Culture, Conflict and Development by Barbara Bubb, 7.30pm
Barbara worked with the World Health Organisation from 1959 to 1977 and then with ODA (now DFID) as Health Advisor, and more recently as a consultant to DFID, the British Council and the WHO. Barbara has particular knowledge on Women and Health and Development as well as a long standing interest in Afghanistan and the surrounding countries. Barbara has been a Trustee of Afghanaid (the charity to provide assistance to Afghans in hardship and distress) since 1991.

The Responsibility to Protect - The New Human Rights Council and Peacebuilding Commission

What are the obstacles and how we can enforce it and avoid wars, genocides and crimes against humanity? Vijay Mehta is an author, peace and development activist. His latest book, 'The United Nations and Its Future in the 21st Century', discuss ideas about the UN's central role in contributing to international peace and security.

He is president of VM Centre for Peace and Chair of Arms Reduction Coalition, and World Disarmament Campaign and Vice Chair of Action for UN Renewal. He is also a founder member of the New School of Athens. He is a member of the National Council of Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND).
